Ukraine Cancels Drone Missions as Starlink Restrictions Disrupt Battlefield Communications

Ukrainian forces have been forced to cancel drone missions after new restrictions on SpaceX’s Starlink satellite communications disrupted connections during flight, with some unmanned aircraft losing contact for up to 20 seconds at speeds as low as 110–120 km/h.

According to hromadske on October 14, Ukraine’s 7th Air Assault Corps confirmed that its units operating in the Huliaipole sector of the Zaporizhzhia region began experiencing connectivity problems overnight. The disruptions affected Starshield, the military-oriented satellite communications service used to control drones in flight.
Military personnel reported that connections could disappear for 10–20 seconds when drones reached speeds of approximately 110–120 km/h. Although the aircraft continued flying, the interruptions made remote control more difficult and increased the risk of losing them during operations.

The restrictions also create additional risks for Ukrainian drone operators. Reducing flight speeds to maintain connectivity makes unmanned aircraft easier targets for Russian forces, while faster drones may be unable to complete their missions under the new conditions.
The 7th Air Assault Corps warned that the problem is particularly serious for medium-range strike drones, which must accelerate rapidly during launch. Unstable communications at those speeds could prevent certain aircraft from taking off successfully or carrying out their intended missions.
The operational consequences have already emerged. According to the corps, one Ukrainian drone unit operating in the Huliaipole sector was forced to cancel several missions on October 14 because of the connectivity disruptions.
Separately, a source within Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense told hromadske that overnight testing identified restrictions preventing Starshield from functioning at speeds exceeding 160 km/h.

The source said the limitations were complicating military logistics, unmanned systems operations, and medium-range strike missions. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry is investigating what caused the restrictions.
Earlier, sources in Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense told UNITED24 Media that overnight testing had identified new restrictions affecting StarShield terminals moving at speeds above approximately 160 km/h.
The reported restrictions came a day after SpaceX owner Elon Musk publicly supported US President Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. Musk wrote on X that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had gone too far.
