Ukrainian forces have made a confirmed advance in the Sumy region while disrupting a series of Russian offensive operations across several other sectors of the front, according to the Institute for the Study of War’s (ISW) October 13 assessment.

Geolocated footage published on October 12 shows Ukrainian troops advancing southeast of Yunakivka, northeast of Sumy, confirming recent gains in the area.

ISW also found no evidence of meaningful Russian progress in several sectors where Moscow continued offensive operations over the previous two days.

In northern Kharkiv region, Russian forces continued attacks on October 12 and 13 without making confirmed gains. Near Kupiansk, Russian troops were also reported to be using Ukrainian civilians as human shields while withdrawing, an action that would violate international humanitarian law.

Russian sources separately claimed attacks southeast of Borova, but ISW found no evidence that those operations resulted in territorial advances.

The same pattern was visible farther south. Russian forces attacked Lyman and areas north of the city toward Kolodiazi, but Ukrainian counterattacks prevented them from consolidating new positions.

Near Chasiv Yar, Russian troops recently attempted to infiltrate Ukrainian positions northwest of the city, while geolocated footage later showed Ukrainian strikes against Russian positions in eastern Klynove.

Russian assaults around Kostiantynivka also failed to produce confirmed gains. Moscow’s forces attacked inside the city, west of it, and southwest of Druzhkivka on October 12 and 13, but ISW recorded no advances. Farther west, Russian troops attempted additional infiltration south of Dobropillia, prompting Ukrainian strikes against positions around Matiashove and Svitlle.

On the Oleksandrivka axis, Russian forces continued offensive operations without confirmed success as Ukrainian troops counterattacked toward Fedorivka.

Russian attacks around Huliaipole on October 11 and 12 similarly failed to produce verified territorial gains.

Earlier, Ukrainian forces regained control of another 101 square kilometers (39 square miles) of territory and liberated three villages in the Donetsk region, bringing the total area recovered during Operation Vivaldi to 277 square kilometers (107 square miles).

Ukraine’s Third Army Corps commander Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi reported that Ukrainian forces had restored full control over 16 settlements during the four-stage operation.

Biletskyi said Russian forces suffered approximately 3,000 personnel losses during the latest phase, raising their estimated total losses throughout the operation to 8,000. These figures have not been independently verified.
