Ukraine Pushes Forward in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia Regions, ISW Reports

Ukrainian forces have made fresh advances in the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, regaining or expanding positions despite continued Russian attempts to press offensive operations, according to an assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on August 26.
The latest battlefield evidence points to Ukrainian gains across several widely separated sectors of the front, with geolocated footage supporting advances near Kupiansk, Dobropillia and Orikhiv.

In the Kharkiv region, Ukrainian forces recently advanced southwest of Dvorichna, north of Kupiansk, according to geolocated footage analyzed by ISW.
Russian reporting also indicates that Ukrainian troops may be gaining ground southeast of Borova.
A Kremlin-affiliated Russian military blogger claimed Ukrainian forces counterattacked near Katerynivka, Nove and Ridkodub and seized territory between Nove and Katerynivka.
The same source warned that Russian troops around the Shandryholove salient could face encirclement and assessed that Moscow’s forces may be losing control of Shandryholove. Russian forces have continued striking Ukrainian positions in the area as Kyiv presses its counterattacks.
Ukraine has also recorded gains farther south in the Donetsk region.
Geolocated footage published on August 26 indicates that Ukrainian forces advanced in Vodyanske and Krasnopodillia, both south of Dobropillia.
Additional footage suggests Ukrainian troops either maintained their positions or advanced around Matiasheve, west of Vodyanske and in the Dobropillia area itself.
Those findings contradict some Russian claims about Moscow’s control of territory in the sector.
A Russian military blogger claimed Russian forces had captured Zolotyi Kolodiaz and advanced near Novovodiane, Bilozetske and Dobropillia. ISW, however, said available geolocated evidence does not support all of those claims.
Ukraine also appears to have improved its positions in western Zaporizhzhia region.

Geolocated footage published on August 26 showed Russian forces striking a Ukrainian position in central Mala Tokmachka, southeast of Orikhiv.
The location is significant because Russian sources had previously claimed that Moscow’s troops controlled positions in that part of the settlement. The presence of Ukrainian troops there indicates that Ukrainian forces either advanced into the area or maintained positions despite earlier Russian claims.
Ukrainian forces are simultaneously continuing strikes against Russian equipment deeper inside occupied parts of the Zaporizhzhia region.
Russian vehicles were recently hit near occupied Tokmak, approximately 27 kilometers, or 17 miles, from the front line.
Earlier, Ukrainian forces advanced south of Dobropillia in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, while Russian attacks in northern Kharkiv region again failed to produce confirmed gains.
