Ukraine Reaches 1,600 km Into Russia to Strike Three Major Oil Refineries

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said its long-range drones struck infrastructure at three major oil refineries in Russia’s Republic of Bashkortostan overnight on August 1, targeting one of the country’s largest refining hubs located nearly 1,600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on August 1, the operation targeted the Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim, Bashneft-Novoil, and Bashneft-UNPZ refineries in the city of Ufa. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed the strikes, praising the operation in a statement published the same day.

“The plants process millions of tons of oil every year. Thank you for your precision! We continue our just pressure. The plan of long-range sanctions is being implemented step by step,” Zelenskyy said.

The three facilities are part of Russia’s Bashneft oil company and together form one of the country’s largest refining complexes. According to the SBU, the combined refining capacity of the plants exceeds 23 million metric tons of crude oil annually.

The agency said the refineries produce gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, lubricants, and other petroleum products, including supplies used by the Russian military.

The SBU also reported that Ukrainian drones struck three Podlyot-K1 radar stations and one Kasta-2E2 radar in Russia’s Krasnodar region. According to the agency, the radar systems are used to detect airborne targets.

“The oil refineries remain among the most important legitimate military targets on Russian territory. They supply fuel to the Russian army and generate a significant share of the revenues that finance the Kremlin’s aggression. The SBU will continue systematically striking such facilities, depriving the enemy of resources needed to wage war,” the agency said.

The reported operation follows a series of long-range Ukrainian strikes against military and energy infrastructure inside Russia.

On August 1, Ukraine’s General Staff also announced strikes on a Russian naval drone storage site in temporarily occupied Crimea, railway bridges, a Black Sea Fleet radio-electronic intelligence unit, a repair base, and drone storage facilities.

Earlier the same day, Russian officials also reported that a container ship operated by FESCO sank in the Black Sea following what they said was an attack by Ukrainian naval drones.
