Ukraine Wipes Out 75 Russian Drones Over Sumy, Including Rare $100,000 Knyaz Veschyi Oleg

Ukrainian air-defense drone operators have destroyed 75 Russian aerial targets over Sumy region since the beginning of August, including 53 Molniya-2 strike drones and a rare Knyaz Veschyi Oleg reconnaissance UAV valued at around $100,000.

Ukraine’s 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade “Magura” reported on August 15 that its Sky Wars unit had intercepted 53 Molniya-2 drones, six ZALA Lancet loitering munitions, six FPV drones, three ZALA reconnaissance UAVs, three Gerbera drones, two drones identified as “Bombers,” one Knyaz Veschyi Oleg and one Mavic quadcopter.

Molniya-2s accounted for more than two-thirds of the total. The fixed-wing Russian FPV drone is designed as a relatively inexpensive platform for tactical strikes and reconnaissance.

Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to the President of Ukraine on defense technology development, estimated its cost at about $1,600, putting the value of the 53 destroyed aircraft at roughly $84,800.

The six Lancets represent a significantly more expensive part of the losses. Developed by ZALA Aero, the Lancet family consists of loitering munitions used to locate and strike battlefield targets.

Beskrestnov estimated the newer X-52 at around $40,000 and the larger X-51 at about $68,000. Since the brigade did not specify the variants, the six destroyed Lancets could be worth approximately $240,000 to $408,000.

Among the rarest targets was the Knyaz Veschyi Oleg, a Russian tactical reconnaissance UAV developed by the Ushkuynik research and production center.

Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence lists it as having a 2.8-meter wingspan, endurance of up to 3.5 hours, an operational radius of around 45 kilometers and a maximum speed of 130 km/h. Ukrainian military units have previously valued the drone at approximately $100,000.

Sky Wars also destroyed three Gerbera drones. The Russian UAV is built largely from inexpensive materials and is commonly used as a decoy resembling Shahed-type attack drones, although reconnaissance and armed variants also exist.

Ukrainian estimates have placed its production cost at around $10,000 per aircraft, giving the three destroyed Gerberas an estimated value of about $30,000.

The brigade did not specify the models of the three ZALA reconnaissance UAVs, six FPVs, two “Bombers,” or the Mavic, making their value difficult to determine reliably.

Based only on the 53 Molniya-2s, six Lancets, three Gerberas and the Knyaz Veschyi Oleg, the 63 identifiable drones had an estimated combined value of approximately $454,800 to $622,800. The real total for all 75 destroyed aircraft would therefore be higher.

Ukraine has also been pushing interceptor drones to greater altitudes. On August 2, border guards using a STING FPV interceptor destroyed a Russian ZALA Z-20 reconnaissance UAV at 6,858 meters over Chernihiv region, setting what Ukrainian authorities described as a world record for drone-on-drone interception.
