Ukrainian Drone Attack Sparks Fire at Russian Oil Refinery Over 1,500 km From Ukraine

A major fire broke out at the Orsknefteorgsintez oil refinery in Russia’s Orenburg region following a reported drone attack, with OSINT analysts assessing that the facility may have been hit.

The Telegram channel Exilenova+ reported the incident on August 11, citing OSINT analysis that identified the Orsknefteorgsintez refinery as the likely target of the attack.

Several explosions were reported at the facility, followed by a large fire. Further analysis of available data indicated that the ELOU-AVT oil refining unit may have been struck.

Exilenova+ later reported that, according to preliminary findings, the attack damaged the refinery’s hydrocracking complex, which has an annual capacity of 1.6 million tonnes. The unit is a key part of the facility’s modernization and is used to process vacuum gas oil and produce light petroleum products.

The OSINT channel said the drones traveled more than 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine’s border to reach the refinery.

“Ukraine continues to impose sanctions on its own against the post-Soviet war machine. And geography is no longer a factor when it comes to these sanctions,” Exilenova+ added.

This is not the first time Russia’s oil infrastructure has come under attack by long-range drones. On April 29, drones targeted energy facilities in two Russian regions, striking an oil refinery in the Orenburg region and a key pipeline facility in the Perm region.

According to the Russian Telegram channel Astra, citing geolocated footage from eyewitnesses, the strike in the Orenburg region likely hit the Orsknefteorgsintez refinery, one of the largest oil processing facilities in the region.
