Drones Strike Key Oil Refinery Hub in Russia’s Tatarstan

Explosions rang out across Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, with residents reporting a drone attack in the area of Nizhnekamsk, OSINT monitoring channels reported on August 10.
The channels pointed out to a strike on the city’s oil refinery.
Russian oil companies have restored slightly less than half of the refining capacity damaged by drone strikes in recent months. It was reported that facilities with a combined capacity of 45 million tons of crude annually remain offline.

According to preliminary information, residents of Nizhnekamsk reported hearing explosions and seeing drones flying overhead. Footage from the scene later began appearing.
The Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has described Russian oil refineries as “legitimate military targets” that “supply fuel to the Russian army” and fund the Kremlin’s war effort, vowing to keep “systematically striking” them.
Confirming an recent strike on three refineries in Russia’s Bashkortostan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: “We continue our just pressure. The plan of long-range sanctions is being implemented step by step.”
Nizhnekamsk is one of Russia’s principal oil-refining centers. The city is home to two major plants—TANECO and TAIF-NK—which specialize in the refining of crude oil and gas condensate, according to RBC-Ukraine.
Both facilities have been targeted by drone attacks before and are considered key components of Russia’s fuel and energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian Armed Forces have targeted Russia’s refining infrastructure elsewhere in the country. Ukraine’s General Staff recently reported overnight strikes on the Ilsky Oil Refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region and the Syzran Oil Refinery in the Samara region, with fires recorded at both sites.
The Ilsky facility has an annual refining capacity of roughly 6.6 million metric tons, while Syzran, operated by Rosneft, has a design capacity of around 8.5 million metric tons of crude oil per year. NASA’s FIRMS satellite system detected fires at the Syzran refinery following the attack.
