Ukrainian FPV Drone Destroys Rare Russian Typhoon Armored Vehicle Worth $2 Million

Ukrainian special forces destroyed a rare Russian Typhoon modular armored vehicle worth approximately $2 million deep behind Russian lines, Ukraine’s Omega Special Purpose Center reported on September 9.

The operation was carried out by soldiers of the center’s 3rd Separate Detachment, which used an FPV drone to strike the vehicle, Omega said, releasing footage of the attack.
Video from the operation shows the drone targeting the Russian armored vehicle as it traveled along a road. The Typhoon initially continued moving after the strike, but later stopped and was largely destroyed by fire.
The Typhoon is a modern Russian modular armored vehicle designed to provide protected transportation for personnel and equipment.
The K-4386 Typhoon-VDV is a 4×4 armored vehicle based on the KamAZ-4386 chassis.
The system is remotely controlled from inside the vehicle through an operator console connected to a ballistic computer and targeting interface. Its onboard equipment delivers real-time video, supports firing adjustments, and provides diagnostics for the combat module’s subsystems.
The Typhoon-VDV remains relatively rare in Russian service, particularly in configurations carrying heavier weapons such as the 30 mm cannon. Ukrainian drone units have previously destroyed other Russian armored vehicles of various types during operations along the front.
Ukraine has also disabled two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers in separate long-range drone strikes on the Engels-2 airbase in Russia’s Saratov region over a six-week period. Unlike armored vehicles, the Soviet-designed strategic bombers are no longer in production, making losses or significant damage particularly difficult for Russia to replace.
The Telegraph reported that both operations were carried out by a specialized long-range unit of Ukraine’s Security Service. Satellite imagery reportedly indicates that one Tu-95 lost its tail section in a July 19 strike, while another sustained significant damage to its right wing in a second attack on August 28.
