Ukrainian FPV Drone Kills Russian Artillery Regiment Commander Who Defected in 2014

A Ukrainian FPV drone strike killed Colonel Oleksandr Isaiev, commander of Russia’s 8th Artillery Regiment and a former Ukrainian officer who switched sides during Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea in 2014.

According to Ukraine’s “Book of Executioners of the Ukrainian People” project, Isaiev was killed in Ukraine’s Kherson region on September 19. The project is maintained by Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence and prosecutors.
Isaiev commanded Russia’s 8th Artillery Regiment, military unit 87714, which operated on the Prymorskyi tactical axis as part of Russia’s Dnepr grouping of forces.
The Ukrainian project said Isaiev was struck by an FPV drone. Militarnyi published an image alongside its report showing Isaiev and a Ukrainian Bulava drone.
Isaiev was born in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, on June 20, 1975, and began serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 1992. He graduated from the Odesa Institute of Ground Forces in 1996 and Ukraine’s National Defense University in 2011.

By 2014, Isaiev was serving as chief of staff and first deputy commander of the 406th Separate Coastal Artillery Brigade within the Ukrainian Navy’s coastal defense forces.
During Russia’s occupation of Crimea that year, Isaiev switched sides and subsequently entered Russian military service. He was appointed chief of staff and deputy commander of the 8th Artillery Regiment of Russia’s 22nd Army Corps, which was then subordinate to the Black Sea Fleet.
Isaiev was discharged into the reserve in 2015 but returned to Russian military service in October 2022, taking up his previous position in the regiment and participating in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
In September 2024, he was promoted to colonel and appointed commander of the 8th Artillery Regiment, a position he held until the September 19 drone strike.
Former Belgorod mayor Konstantin Polezhayev was also recently reported killed while serving in Russia’s war against Ukraine. He had joined the Russian military after being convicted in a multimillion-ruble bribery case and sentenced to five years in a maximum-security penal colony.
