NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte issued a direct appeal to young Russians, urging them to critically examine the information provided by their government regarding Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

During a press conference in Kyiv held on June 3 alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Rutte highlighted the grim reality of the war, noting that Moscow is obscuring the true scale of human losses to maintain a steady flow of recruits to the front lines.

The NATO leader emphasized that the current casualty rate for Russian forces is staggering. According to Alliance data, Russia is losing approximately 30,000 soldiers every month—a figure that exceeds the total number of Soviet casualties sustained during the entire decade-long war in Afghanistan.

"You are being deceived. You are being sent to a war where you risk dying for the political ambitions of the Kremlin. Even if you are wounded, you will be left to die in the mud until you perish," Rutte stated.

He further warned that young recruits are frequently deployed with insufficient training and inadequate equipment. He stressed that these losses are not just abstract statistics, but represent tens of thousands of individual lives lost.

President Zelenskyy also addressed the casualty figures, estimating that Russia loses between 30,000 and 35,000 personnel monthly. The President noted that while the Kremlin continues to replace these losses with new contract soldiers and mobilized troops, the consistent depletion of manpower is creating significant systemic strain within the Russian military.

Zelenskyy observed that since December, Russian forces have struggled to maintain the initiative on the battlefield, noting that the volume of territory they are capable of seizing has diminished.

He argued that the combination of high attrition rates and ongoing international sanctions may eventually compel the Kremlin to consider negotiations, though he maintained that sustained global pressure remains essential.

During a joint press conference, Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had reached an annual investment of $45 to $50 billion in domestic weapons production, a move he described as an unprecedented effort to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Armed Forces.
