Zelenskyy Confirms Breakthrough as Native Interceptor Downs Jet-Powered Shahed

Ukrainian forces have successfully downed a Russian jet-powered "Shahed" drone using a domestically produced interceptor, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported following a trial update from Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi.
The milestone marks another successful interceptor test aimed at countering advanced aerial threats deployed during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Writing on social media, Zelenskyy shared details from the military leadership, stating: "There was a report from Commander-in-Chief of the AFU Mykhailo Drapatyi. It is important that there is another positive result of testing interceptors against reactive 'Shaheds': there was a downing. I thank all the developers and our warriors. We will scale up."
This operational test follows an earlier trial on September 15, when Zelenskyy confirmed initial testing of a native interceptor model.
At that time, officials noted that the control systems required further adjustments before full integration.
On September 15, 2026, Ukraine conducted tests on another drone interceptor engineered specifically to counter jet-powered attack drones fielded during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Engineers and developers continued fine-tuning specific components of the interceptor’s control system, while officials emphasized that active development remained underway before the aerial defense system reached full operational readiness.
Russia increased the intensity of its jet-powered drone attacks on Ukraine more than eightfold over the summer, launching around 2,800 such drones in August compared with roughly 350 in June.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat stated that Russia launched around 800 jet-powered drones over four days in late August, with most targeting Kyiv immediately after production.
Air defense experts noted that the increased speed of systems like the latest Geran and Banderol models reduced the reaction window for mobile fire teams from one minute down to six seconds.
