Amenian PM Calls to Resolve “Problematic Issues” in Meeting with Russian Counterpart

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a joint news conference that he hopes to mend diplomatic ties with Russia and resolve recent “problematic issues,” Reuters reported on June 6.
Speaking in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg alongside Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Pashinyan noted the meeting provided an opportunity to align bilateral interests following his re-election in a parliamentary vote earlier in June.

The diplomatic engagement follows wide-ranging trade restrictions imposed by Moscow in the lead-up to the Armenian election, which temporarily banned imports of Armenian fresh produce, flowers, fish, and alcohol. Reuters reported that Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party secured victory over several pro-Russian opposition parties, despite pressure from Moscow.
The Kremlin had previously threatened to suspend Yerevan from the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union due to Pashinyan’s increasingly pro-Western foreign policy and efforts to pursue European Union membership.
However, Pashinyan reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to developing relations with the Russian Federation and participating in the Eurasian Economic Union. Reuters highlighted that Armenia remains heavily dependent on Russia for its energy supplies, with Moscow accounting for approximately 35% of Armenia’s foreign trade last year.

In contrast to Moscow’s trade bans, the European Union has expanded its footprint in the region, disbursing €52 million ($59.4 million) in economic support to Armenia and liberalizing export rules for Armenian goods entering European markets in the month since the election, Reuters wrote.
This diplomatic balancing act occurs alongside Armenia’s expanding security cooperation with Western nations. The country had recently hosted the multinational Eagle Partner peacekeeping exercises, expanding what was previously a bilateral drill with the United States into a four-way initiative including military personnel from France and Greece.
The joint maneuvers focused on tactical communication and interoperability, reflecting Yerevan’s defense diversification despite its formal treaty alliance with Moscow.
