British Arms Makers Join €90 Billion EU-Backed Ukraine Support Plan

The European Union has approved the participation of the United Kingdom in a massive €90 billion ($97.2 billion) support loan for Ukraine covering 2026 and 2027.
Under this agreement, Ukraine will be able to spend these funds to purchase military products directly from British defense manufacturers alongside suppliers within EU member states, according to Council of the European Union on July 22.

The overall funding framework remains divided into €60 billion ($64.8 billion) allocated for military and defense industrial needs, and €30 billion ($32.4 billion) directed toward supporting Ukraine's state budget.
The approval follows a bilateral agreement signed between the United Kingdom and the European Union on July 13.
British involvement was authorized after the UK satisfied three main prerequisites: contributing to loan-related overhead expenses, establishing a security and defense partnership with the EU, and maintaining active financial and military assistance to Ukraine.
The overall support package was originally approved by EU leaders to provide sustained assistance through 2026 and 2027. For the year 2026, funding allocations are structured with €28.3 billion ($30.6 billion) set aside for defense capabilities and €16.7 billion ($18 billion) reserved for direct budget aid.
Previously, nine European Union member states called on the European Commission to urgently approve the procurement of US-made air defense missiles for Ukraine using funding from the EU's €90 billion ($102 billion) defense support package for 2026–2027.
In a joint letter, the defense ministers of the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, and Poland argued that the Commission needed to swiftly authorize these purchases, as Ukraine's urgent operational requirements could not currently be met by European industry.
