Nine EU Countries Push to Fund Patriot Missiles for Ukraine Using €90 Billion Defense Package

Nine European Union member states have called on the European Commission to urgently approve the procurement of US-made air defense missiles for Ukraine using funding from the EU's €90 billion (around $102 billion) defense support package for 2026–2027, according to a joint letter obtained by European Pravda on July 7.
The letter, addressed to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius, was signed by the defense ministers of the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, and Poland.

The ministers argue that the Commission should swiftly authorize purchases of key US-made weapons systems through the defense component of the EU funding package, citing Ukraine's urgent operational requirements that cannot currently be met by European industry.
The letter states that Ukraine is preparing the next delivery schedules for key military capabilities, including air defense, aviation munitions, long-range strike systems, artillery ammunition, electronic warfare equipment, and explosives.
It adds that during recent expert-level consultations and the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in its defense ministers' format, Ukraine made clear that several critical military requirements either have no European alternative or cannot be supplied by European manufacturers within the necessary timeframe.

According to the document, Kyiv's priority requirements include PAC-3 interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems, AIM-120 air-to-air missiles, ATACMS long-range missiles, ADM-160 MALD decoys, and AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles.
The nine countries urged the European Commission not to delay approval of the procurement schedules while awaiting the completion of its assessment of the European defense technological and industrial base or conducting additional market studies.
The appeal comes after Poland publicly confirmed for the first time that it had supplied Ukraine with Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missiles as part of its military assistance.
According to Defence24, Poland's Ministry of National Defense declassified details of its military aid during a special briefing on July 6, revealing the full scope of equipment transferred in 2022–2023, as well as additional assistance delivered since 2024. The ministry did not disclose the quantities of weapons or equipment provided.
