NATO Launches $40 Billion Drone Edge Initiative to Counter Drone Threats

NATO has launched a new $40 billion initiative aimed at strengthening the Alliance's ability to counter unmanned aerial threats, drawing on lessons learned from the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the initiative, known as Drone Edge, during the NATO Defense Industry Forum held on July 7 alongside the Alliance's summit in Ankara, according to UNITED24 Media correspondents present at the event.

Rutte said NATO must significantly expand its ability to detect, identify, and neutralize drones that could violate Allied airspace.
Under the Drone Edge initiative, NATO member states will invest $40 billion over the next five years in counter-drone technologies and capabilities.
Rutte said that, because operating such systems requires trained personnel, NATO allies had committed to increasing the number of drone operators in their armed forces fivefold. He added that the Alliance would support member states through the end of 2027 to help them fulfill those commitments.

As part of the initiative, NATO will establish a dedicated counter-drone marketplace intended to help member states procure anti-drone systems more rapidly and at scale.
The Alliance also plans to expand drone pilot training through the NATO Flight Training Europe program. According to Rutte, Finland, France, and Sweden have joined the project, bringing the total number of participating NATO members to 20.
During the same forum, NATO also unveiled two new initiatives aimed at expanding defense production across the Alliance and strengthening cooperation with the defense industry to bolster Allied security and support Ukraine.

The first initiative, NATO Front Door for Industry, is designed to simplify engagement between NATO and defense companies by creating a single access point for information on Alliance procurement opportunities, innovation programs, and other forms of cooperation.
Rutte also introduced NATO Engine, a new mechanism intended to enhance transatlantic defense industrial cooperation and scale up weapons production across Allied countries.
