Germany Plans Up to €50 Million to Repair Damaged Chornobyl Nuclear Arch

Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment plans to provide Ukraine with up to €50 million ($54 million) in assistance to repair the protective shell of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, according to Welt on August 19.
The shelter sustained damage in 2025 following a strike by a Russian drone.

Total repair costs are estimated at no less than €500 million ($540 million), an amount Ukraine cannot collect on its own, while the European Union will also direct €75 million ($81 million) in grant assistance to rebuild the plant's New Safe Confinement.
Minister Carsten Schneider sent a letter to the Bundestag’s Budget Committee asking for authorization to allocate the extra funds out of turn during the 2026 financial year, with the final payout planned for 2027.
Schneider is currently on a multi-day visit to Ukraine, during which he intended to visit the Chornobyl facility. According to the ministry's letter, urgent repairs are required "to permanently prevent a possible leak of radioactive substances into the environment."
Experts believe that the protective capability of the steel arch, constructed over the original multi-billion-dollar concrete sarcophagus, is no longer assured.

"The repair is extremely complex," Schneider noted in an official ministry statement, "and joint international efforts are required for its timely execution. A corresponding process has already begun among the G7 countries."
During his trip to Kyiv, Schneider pledged to support Ukraine in addressing the damage inflicted on the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant's containment structure, according to ntv.
On June 7, Energoatom reported that a Russian drone hit the facility’s container reception building, causing structural damage and a fire that was later extinguished.
The company stated that no spent nuclear fuel was stored inside the damaged building at the time of the attack and that radiation conditions remained within established safety limits.
