During the meeting, Forstoffer expressed support for the Ukrainian people and confirmed Hungary’s readiness to continue providing assistance to Ukraine and its citizens.

She also reaffirmed Hungary's support for Ukraine’s path toward joining the European Union.

The leaders of both parliaments discussed steps to step up interparliamentary cooperation and reflected on shared historical experiences.

Stefanchuk noted that both nations have endured tragic events stemming from Soviet oppression, pointing to Ukraine's experience of the Holodomor and Hungary's memory of Soviet repressions and forced labor, known as "malenkij robot ." He emphasized that both peoples share a historic understanding of the violence originating from Moscow.

On October 13, 2026, the European Union formally opened Clusters 2 and 3 of accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova during an Intergovernmental Conference in Luxembourg.

This step became possible after the Verkhovna Rada passed amendments to the national law on education, which addressed requirements previously set by Hungary.

While Transparency International Ukraine recognized the decision as an important milestone for European integration, the organization noted that overall progress still lagged behind the targets established in June 2026, with Executive Director Andrii Borovyk emphasizing that significant reforms remained ahead.

Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is the unicameral (single-chamber) national parliament and the sole legislative body of Ukraine.

The term "malenkij robot" (from the Hungarian adaptation of the Russian malenkayat rabota, meaning "little work") refers to the mass forced labor deportation of ethnic Hungarians and Ukrainians by Soviet forces following World War II. Under the guise of short-term cleanup tasks, hundreds of thousands of civilians were sent to Soviet labor camps, where many perished due to harsh conditions.
