Iran and Russia have held negotiations regarding a potential agreement for Moscow to supply Tehran with long-range S-400 air defense missile systems.

According to a report by The Telegraph, Iranian officials hold an “optimistic” view on obtaining these air defense assets, which Tehran has sought to acquire for several years, as stated by a senior Iranian official.

Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei dispatched security chief Mohsen Rezaei to Russia on November 5 carrying a personal letter.

A source cited by the publication indicated that the primary request outlined in the message was the delivery of these weapons systems.

Alongside military discussions, the two parties also addressed plans for constructing a new gas pipeline connecting Russia and Iran.

On November 5, Russia agreed to supply Iran with 90 helicopter-mounted launchers for precision-guided missiles used against Ukraine, citing leaked Russian defense industry documents obtained by Ukrainian intelligence.

The order specified APU-L missile launchers designed for Mi-28 attack helicopters to fire LMUR guided missiles, which allow operators to adjust flight paths in real time up to a range of 14 kilometers.

Analysts noted that the agreement highlighted ongoing military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, demonstrating Russia’s willingness to deliver advanced hardware to Iran despite its own wartime requirements in its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
