NATO Responds to Drapatyi’s Appointment as Ukraine’s New Commander-in-Chief

NATO's strategy and military cooperation with Ukraine remain clear and steadfast following the appointment of Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Hromadske reported on July 22.

Reassuring international partners after the military leadership shuffle in Kyiv, Giovanni Galoforo, Public Affairs and Strategic Communications Advisor to the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, emphasized that routine personnel rotations will not disrupt ongoing security assistance.

“Of course, no changes in military cooperation are anticipated, as rotations in positions occur constantly, and the Alliance’s support strategy is clear and steadfast,” Galoforo stated, according to Hromadske.

The leadership transition comes as Drapatyi assumes command of Ukraine’s defense forces following senior personnel changes in the country’s defense leadership. Galoforo noted that while he has not yet held formal discussions with the newly appointed chief, he anticipates establishing direct contact shortly. “Personally, I have never met General Drapatyi before,” Galoforo said, adding that he looks forward to meeting with Ukraine’s top commander as bilateral coordination continues, Hromadske reported.

Following days of public demonstrations triggered by the removal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi as Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces on July 21, 2026, succeeding General Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Drapatyi, a veteran officer who previously commanded Ukraine’s Ground Forces and key frontline defense sectors in Southern and Eastern Ukraine, earned widespread respect for his operational leadership and reform initiatives dating back to the early stages of Russia’s invasion in 2014.
