NATO Warns of Devastating Consequences Over Russian Nuclear Training

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated during a Brussels press conference on May 20 that Russia will face "devastating" consequences if it decides to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
The statement came in response to the joint Russian and Belarusian military exercises currently underway to practice the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons capabilities.

The alliance is maintaining a close watch on the situation. According to the NATO chief, Moscow remains fully aware of the potential outcomes of any such actions.
The remarks coincide with the launch of joint maneuvers this week involving Russian and Belarusian missile forces, aviation, and additional military assets. The drills are designed to simulate the logistical preparation and potential use of non-strategic nuclear munitions.
Belarusian defense officials noted that the training schedule covers the transport of special munitions, deployment readiness, and operations conducted from un-prepared field positions.
While Minsk maintains the exercises do not pose a threat to third nations, the activities occur alongside ongoing strategic posturing from the Kremlin.
Independent military analysts previously categorized similar exercises as forms of information operations designed to influence Western security assistance.
The maneuvers are seen as efforts to discourage continued international defense support for Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Russia is seeking to involve Belarus more directly in its war effort, with potential scenarios including operations against northern Ukraine or even a NATO member state.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian officials have recently held further discussions with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko aimed at encouraging Minsk to take a more active role in planned Russian military operations.
