New Investigation Exposes Russia-North Korea Road Bridge as Covert Military Corridor

Russia and North Korea are finalizing the first-ever road bridge connecting the two nations across the Tumen River, The Guardian reported on July 28.
This establishes a strategic land link that experts warn is designed to expand covert military logistics supporting Moscow’s war effort.

Spanning between Khasan in Russia’s far east and Tumangang in North Korea, the two-lane, one-kilometer bridge runs alongside the existing rail-only Friendship Bridge. While North Korea completed its portion of the infrastructure ahead of a planned June opening, Russian construction on customs and border facilities remains underway, with satellite imagery showing a planned 10-lane border checkpoint and helicopter pad under development.
Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin and North Korean state media KCNA have publicly framed the $100 million project as an economic initiative to boost bilateral trade and tourism, according to the publication.
However, an investigation by the Ukrainian human rights organization Truth Hounds, shared with the outlet, indicates that the project’s economic rationale is weak, given that bilateral trade stood at just $34 million in 2024 and tourism is strictly controlled.
Instead, researchers concluded the crossing serves primarily as strategic infrastructure to transport North Korean troops, construction crews, and military officials into Russia while transferring Russian technology and resources in return, The Guardian reported.
Unlike rail transit, which is constrained by fixed hubs and a gauge mismatch between the Russian and North Korean rail networks, road transit allows military cargo to move with minimal operational friction. Nazar Myhun, who led the open-source investigation at Truth Hounds, told the newspaper that road transportation makes it far easier for both regimes to evade Western satellite monitoring compared to rail transit.
“The type of railcar visible in an image reveals a great deal about the cargo, and certain categories of goods are transported in open railcars, which allows them to be identified,” Myhun explained, noting that “trucks, by contrast, almost always look the same in satellite imagery.”
The bridge construction follows the comprehensive strategic partnership signed by Russian leader Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June 2024, which cemented formal defense ties between the two nations.
North Korea has already deployed over 14,000 soldiers to assist Russian forces in Russia’s Kursk region following Ukraine’s August 2024 incursion, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning that Moscow is preparing to receive an additional 30,000 North Korean troops as military cooperation accelerates.
