Poland Scrambles Military Aviation, Puts Air Defenses on Alert During Russian Strikes

Poland activated military aviation and placed its ground-based air defenses on alert on September 21 in response to Russian strikes on Ukraine.
The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command said military aircraft began operating in Polish airspace while the Air Operations Center activated forces and assets under its control. Ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems were also brought to readiness.

The command described the measures as preventive and aimed at protecting Polish airspace, particularly in areas bordering regions exposed to Russian attacks.
The Operational Command described the measures as "preventive in nature," emphasizing they were "aimed at securing airspace and its protection, especially in areas adjacent to threatened areas."
The Operational Command directs Poland's armed forces during real-world operations and safeguards national airspace as part of NATO's integrated air defense on the alliance's eastern flank.
The command stated that it continued to monitor the situation, and that its subordinate forces and assets remained ready for immediate reaction.
Later that night, Poland ended the military aviation operation and returned its ground-based air defense and radar systems to normal operations. The command said no violation of Polish airspace had been recorded, Reuters reported.
The alert followed a series of comparable activations along Poland's eastern border in recent weeks.
Poland scrambled fighter jets overnight on September 15 as Russia struck western Ukraine with jet-powered drones. Ground-based air defense and radar systems were placed on heightened readiness before standing down hours later, with no airspace violations recorded.
Two days later, Russian drone strikes near the border in Ukraine's Volyn region prompted Poland to deploy military aircraft and briefly suspend operations at the airports in Lublin and Rzeszów.
An unmanned aerial vehicle came down roughly four kilometers from the Polish border, and officials confirmed no incursion into Polish airspace.
