Russian Drone Strike Near Polish Border Forces Jet Scramble and Airport Closures

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on September 17, that Russian drone strikes occurred near the Ukrainian-Polish border in the Volyn region, according to Reuters.
In response to the incident, Poland deployed military aircraft, and operations at airports in Lublin and Rzeszów were temporarily suspended.

According to Tusk, a gas station located near the Yahodyn border checkpoint was likely targeted during the attack.
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that an unmanned aerial vehicle crashed or was shot down approximately 4 kilometers from the Polish-Ukrainian border.
Military officials confirmed that no violation of Polish airspace took place, while Reuters noted that Ukrainian authorities stated no impacts occurred directly at the border crossing facility.
A similar border attack had already occurred just two days prior when Russian aerial strikes triggered a air defense alert in the same region. Poland scrambled fighter jets overnight on September 15 in response to renewed Russian attacks on western Ukraine involving jet-powered strike drones, according to Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command.
The command reported that Polish and allied aircraft were deployed around 4 a.m. while ground-based air defense and radar systems were placed on heightened readiness.
The measures were taken as a precaution to protect Polish airspace, and by 6:30 a.m., officials announced that the potential threat had passed with no recorded violations of Polish airspace.
The incidents follow another recent airspace breach involving a NATO member. On September 8, Romania deployed two F-18 fighter jets after military radar detected an aerial object entering Romanian airspace at around 4:47 p.m., roughly 18 kilometers north of Roman.
The detection prompted air raid warnings in several nearby communities. Shortly beforehand, at approximately 4:20 p.m., neighboring Moldova reported that a drone, preliminarily identified as a Shahed, had entered its territory.
