Russian Spy Plane Flies Dark as Poland Sends Fighter Jets to Light the Way

Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on August 3, roughly 60 kilometers northwest of the coastal town of Łeba. It marked another such encounter within days, and no violation of Polish airspace occurred.

The interception was reported by Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, on the platform X on the same day, and relayed by the Polish Press Agency.

"Before noon, 60 kilometers northwest of Łeba over the Baltic, a duty pair of our aircraft intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft," Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote.

The interception occurred in international airspace rather than Polish sovereign airspace. Intercepting an unidentified aircraft over international waters is standard procedure when radio contact is absent, and it does not constitute an airspace violation.

The Il-20 remained in international airspace throughout the mission. Polish pilots visually identified the flights and used optoelectronic systems to escort them beyond Poland’s designated airspace.

Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the Polish Armed Forces "continuously monitor our security in the area" and take measures to protect the national border.

The Il-20 is a Soviet-designed reconnaissance aircraft built to gather electronic and signals intelligence. Polish authorities have noted that Russian aircraft flying near NATO borders probe the alliance's reactions and air defenses.

The latest interception followed a similar episode the previous Friday, when a pair of Polish F-16s intercepted a Russian Il-20 about 40 kilometers north of Kołobrzeg. That aircraft likewise crossed international airspace without a filed flight plan and with its transponder disabled. Russian aircraft were intercepted over the Baltic on several occasions in mid-July as well.

Such incidents have recurred at varying intervals since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Aircraft intercepted near Ustka and the village of Jastrzębia Góra have included reconnaissance Il-20s and Su-30 combat jets.

Meanwhile, encounters have grown routine over the Baltic in recent months.

On July 14, Polish fighters intercepted a Russian Il-20 over international waters in what was the tenth documented interception of a Russian military aircraft in the region since the start of the year.

By late July, Polish and Swedish jets had intercepted Russian military aircraft three times within a single week, as Warsaw assessed the threat from Moscow as very high.
