Russia Could Turn Captured Ukrainian Drones Against NATO, Poland Warns

Poland’s defense minister has warned that Russia may use captured Ukrainian drones in potential false flag operations, raising the issue ahead of a government security committee meeting focused on emerging hybrid threats.

According to RMF24, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Russia had seized a significant number of Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles that could be repurposed for provocations.
“Russia has captured many Ukrainian drones and may use them as an element of provocation, changing the markings on them,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said, according to RMF24.
The minister said the issue would be discussed during a meeting of Poland’s government security committee scheduled for Tuesday. He added that Warsaw continues to assess the overall threat posed by Russia as remaining at a “very high” level.
Kosiniak-Kamysz also pointed to recent military activity over the Baltic Sea, noting that Polish and Swedish fighter aircraft intercepted Russian military aircraft three times over the past week. He said Poland continues to face attempts to test its air defense systems and critical infrastructure, alongside cyber operations and GPS signal interference.
“We are constantly dealing with testing the resilience of our air defense systems and critical infrastructure, especially in the area of internet operations, as well as GPS jamming. The arrests carried out by the Internal Security Agency and the Military Counterintelligence Service best demonstrate that Russia has not changed its tactics,” he said, according to RMF24.
According to RMF24, the discussion comes as Poland continues to strengthen preparations against potential hybrid threats. Earlier this month, Polish media reported, citing intelligence assessments, that Warsaw considers itself a possible target for Russian military or hybrid provocations intended to test NATO's response and weaken Western support for Ukraine.
The warning follows multiple incidents in which Russian electronic warfare is believed to have diverted Ukrainian long-range drones off course, causing them to enter the airspace or territory of neighboring NATO countries, including Poland and Romania.
Poland’s warning comes a day after Lithuania issued a similar assessment. On July 20, Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said Russia could seek to escalate tensions on NATO's eastern flank by targeting the Baltic states or Poland, while President Gitanas Nausėda said intelligence indicated Moscow could carry out military or hybrid provocations against the region to test NATO's unity.
