Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying over international waters in the Baltic Sea on July 14. This incident represents the tenth intercept of a Russian military aircraft in the region documented since the beginning of the year.

The operation did not involve a violation of Polish airspace, was announced by the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces and Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

"Another Russian provocation over the Baltic Sea. Another effective reaction of the Polish Armed Forces," Kosiniak-Kamysz stated. According to the defense minister, the Russian reconnaissance flight was designed to collect information on Polish defense systems and "test NATO’s readiness."

Polish fighter pilots established direct contact with the Russian aircraft, after which the crew altered their course and moved back toward Russian airspace.

"I remind you: it is Russia that is the aggressor! Therefore, strong Polish Armed Forces and support for Ukraine, which weakens its potential every day, are in our interests, and based on reciprocity and partnership," Kosiniak-Kamysz added. He emphasized the strategic importance of defense cooperation amidst Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

While international flights over the Baltic Sea are common, military analysts note that Russian reconnaissance aircraft often operate with disabled transponders and without submitting flight plans.

The last reported encounter between Polish fighters and a Russian reconnaissance plane in the area occurred in May.

Previously, a Russian drone violated Moldovan airspace during a massive bombardment of Ukraine, forcing authorities to temporarily restrict national airspace across northern and central Moldova.

The unmanned aerial vehicle crossed the border from Ukraine’s Vinnytsia region, traversing deep into Moldovan territory before disappearing from radar near Giurgiulesti, a port village bordering NATO-member Romania.
