Finland and Sweden plan to jointly acquire uncrewed maritime vessels to enhance security monitoring in the Baltic Sea, Yle reports on September 16.

Finnish Navy Commander Tuomas Tiilikainen announced the initiative following a meeting with his Swedish counterpart on the island of Suomenlinna.

Joint operations under this project could begin as early as this year.

The initiative focuses on deploying uncrewed surface vessels that resemble sailboats and carry integrated sensor systems, radar equipment, and surveillance cameras.

The joint effort allows Finland to direct specific resources toward counter-drone defense operations in the eastern Gulf of Finland, addressing threats posed by stray uncrewed aerial vehicles originating from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On September 16, 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for a NATO-style mechanism to counter escalating hybrid threats, state-sponsored sabotage, and drone incursions across the continent.

Under the proposed "counter-hybrid playbook," any single European Union member facing non-military aggression could trigger emergency consultations to coordinate a unified response.

The initiative came amid a sharp rise in covert operations attributed to Moscow, including an Italian fighter jet downing a drone that had entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus, a foiled explosive drone plot targeting a cargo aircraft in Germany, and widespread arson attacks executed by online recruits across Poland and the Baltic states.
