Russia Awards Commander Whose Warship Fired Flares at Danish Military Helicopter

Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov awarded the commander of the Baltic Fleet corvette Soobrazitelny after the Russian warship fired signal flares toward a Danish military helicopter in international waters near Gedser, Denmark, Russia’s Defense Ministry said.

Belousov presented the commander with the Medal “For Combat Merit” for what the Russian ministry described as “skillful and decisive actions in preventing a provocation by a Danish Air Force helicopter.”
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the incident occurred at 2:22 p.m. on September 14 while the Soobrazitelny was operating in international waters in the southwestern Baltic Sea.
The Russian side claimed the corvette detected an aircraft it identified as a Danish Air Force Fennec helicopter approaching the warship. Moscow alleged that the helicopter did not respond to calls made over an international communications channel.

“To prevent a provocation by the Danish helicopter, the corvette commander decided to fire two red signal flares, after which the helicopter left the area where the Russian warship was located,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
A Russian Navy warship fired two signal flares toward a Danish Air Force helicopter conducting an operation over international waters near Denmark, with one flare passing close to the aircraft.
The Danish Armed Forces provided a different account of the encounter, saying the Fennec helicopter was conducting routine photographic surveillance of the Russian vessel in international waters off Gedser when the corvette fired two signal flares in its direction.
According to the Danish military, one of the flares passed a short distance from the helicopter. No damage to the aircraft or injuries among the crew were reported.

The September encounter follows another incident involving Russian and Danish vessels in the Baltic Sea earlier this year. In July, a Russian corvette operating with its position transponder switched off approached a Danish unmanned surface vessel while it was testing advanced radar technology southeast of Bornholm.
The Russian warship shadowed the Danish vessel and deployed an aerial drone that approached to within a few feet to inspect it.
