Latvia Finds Fragment of Russian Gerbera Decoy Drone on Baltic Coast

A fragment of the tail section of a Russian Gerbera decoy drone was found on a beach in the Ventspils region of Latvia, likely washed ashore by the sea, LSM+ reported on September 18.
According to preliminary police information, the site posed no danger. A unit from the National Armed Forces was dispatched to neutralize any potentially explosive objects and analyze the fragment.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds confirmed to Latvian television that the object was indeed a Gerbera decoy drone and that it contained no explosives.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa also addressed the incident on social media platform X, writing that the defense minister had confirmed to her that the drone fragment contained no explosives.
Valsts policija ir atradusi drona atlūzas pie Ventspils pludmales. Sazinoties ar aizsardzības ministru, viņš man apliecināja, ka sprāgstvielas tajā nav konstatētas.

Esmu uzdevusi aizsardzības un iekšlietu ministriem sazināties ar kolēģiem Polijā, lai noskaidrotu, vai drons… https://t.co/SlA92upCUg
“I have tasked the Ministers of Defense and Interior to liaise with their counterparts in Poland to determine whether the drone is presumably not the same type as the one found in Poland last week,” Siliņa stated.
She emphasized that “protecting the Baltic Sea coastline by installing the necessary sensors is just as important as strengthening the Eastern border.”
Russian drones that entered Polish airspace overnight on September 10 appear to have followed flight paths aligned with major roads and radar stations leading toward Warsaw and Lublin.
A week later, on September 15, authorities in Poland neutralized a drone operating over key government sites, including the Belweder presidential palace and nearby Parkowa Street, Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed.
Previously, it was reported that Europe is stepping up efforts to create a unified defense against Russian drone threats, with Ukraine’s battle-tested technologies playing a central role.
