Europe is stepping up efforts to create a unified defense against Russian drone threats, with Ukraine’s battle-tested technologies playing a central role, according to a report by Financial Times on September 17.

Following recent Russian drone incursions into Poland and Romania, EU has committed €6 billion (7.1$ billion) to establish a coordinated “drone wall” on Europe’s eastern borders.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the need for a real-time response capability that involves Ukraine’s technology, advocating for a joint industrial approach to counter Russian drone attacks.

Countries like Poland, Finland, and the Baltic states have already announced border reinforcements, but officials stress that a unified approach is key to success.

One EU official told Financial Times that a Europe’s fragmented defense posture could allow Russia to exploit vulnerabilities.

NATO’s Eastern Sentry mission has been launched to bolster air defense along the eastern flank, but concerns remain about Europe’s readiness.

Ukraine’s low-cost drone defense solutions, including acoustic sensors and mobile anti-drone teams, have proven effective and affordable compared to missile interceptors, Financial Times writes.

NATO members such as Lithuania and Latvia are adopting these methods, while Romania is exploring how to integrate Ukraine’s practices into its own defense strategy.

As drone warfare evolves, European nations are increasingly turning to Ukraine’s innovative solutions to strengthen their defenses and secure the region’s airspace.

“The whole concept of drone war has changed the nature of modern armed conflict,” Brigadier General Markku Viitasaari, director of Finland’s National Defence Unit told Financial Times.

Previously, it was reported that the European Union intended to closely involve Ukraine in the development of a “drone wall” along the bloc’s eastern borders, drawing on Kyiv’s extensive battlefield experience against Russian unmanned systems.

According to Ukrinform, European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius said the initiative was discussed during visits with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to EU border states.
