Poland Sets Final Deadline for Ukraine on MiG-29 and Drone Exchange

Poland issued a strict deadline to Ukraine regarding the potential transfer of Polish MiG-29 fighter jets in exchange for drone technology cooperation.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Warsaw expects a final decision from Kyiv within the coming weeks, according to WP Wiadomości on July 27.

If no agreement is reached in this timeframe, Poland is prepared to sell the combat aircraft to Bulgaria, which has expressed active interest in purchasing them.

This ultimatum comes shortly after news on June 30, 2026, that Ukraine agreed to purchase 16 Gripen E fighter jets from Sweden. According to the Polish Defense Minister, the proposal remains active, but further progress rests entirely on the Ukrainian side.

"The offer is on the table," he emphasized. Warsaw expects to receive advanced drone technology alongside a political commitment from Kyiv.

Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted Ukraine's rapid development in uncrewed aerial systems, noting, "Ukraine has created a powerful drone industry and even exports drones to the Middle East. The time has come to say what we expect in return — know-how in what they are strong in, as well as cooperation and the transfer of a portion of drones that we could use."

At present, negotiations between military headquarters are focusing on maintenance, repairs, and financing for the aircraft. Meanwhile, Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the Polish MiG-29 fleet remains in good operational condition and that Bulgaria is prepared to buy them.

"They are in such good condition that the Bulgarians want to buy them. If someone is ready to pay for them, it means they are truly valuable," he said.

Previously, the Polish Ministry of National Defense decided to decommission its remaining MiG-29 fighter jets after Ukraine reportedly failed to fulfill its side of a proposed equipment exchange.

Under the initial bilateral agreement, Warsaw planned to supply the aircraft to Kyiv in exchange for advanced Ukrainian drone technology.

However, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the deal fell through, leading Poland to halt the transfer and phase out the aging fighter fleet from service at the Malbork air base instead.
