An unauthorized drone breached the perimeter of the strategic US Aegis Ashore missile defense base in Redzikowo, Poland, Polish news outlet Onet reported on September 21.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of September 15. Poland’s Ministry of National Defense (MON) confirmed the breach, stating that reconnaissance systems detected the unmanned aerial vehicle operating approximately 500 meters from the facility for roughly five minutes.
The Redzikowo installation is a cornerstone of the US and NATO missile defense shield in Europe, Onet noted.
While American personnel operate the advanced radar and interceptor systems, the Polish military holds primary responsibility for the physical security of the base and its surrounding airspace, deploying a specialized subunit for this exact purpose.

According to Onet, rather than engaging the drone with electronic warfare jammers or kinetic countermeasures, the Polish military unit initiated civilian protocols, reporting the incident to the 112 emergency dispatch and local police.
The defense ministry stated that authorities successfully identified the location from which the operator was flying the drone, but declined to specify if any military anti-drone systems were activated during the breach, citing operational security.
The incident has raised severe concerns regarding the Polish Armed Forces' readiness to defend critical infrastructure. Despite the prominent role of cheap, tactical drones used for reconnaissance and explosive delivery in neighboring Ukraine, military sources told Onet that Polish installations remain highly vulnerable.
Security experts warn that even heavily guarded ground facilities are functionally defenseless from the air without modernized, localized anti-drone defense grids.
Russia has been deliberately escalating its hybrid warfare against Europe by flying military drones directly into NATO airspace. These incursions into Poland, Romania, Latvia, Germany, and other countries are designed to probe Western radar networks, test political red lines, and normalize airspace violations without triggering a direct military response.
Poland had recently scrambled military jets and placed ground-based air defense and radar systems on high alert in response to Russian airstrikes targeting neighboring regions in Ukraine.
The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command described the activation as a preventive measure to secure NATO's eastern flank airspace.
