Pro-Russian Factions Unite in German State Assembly to Challenge Defense Backing for Kyiv

Lawmakers in the regional parliament of Saxony-Anhalt passed a joint motion brought forward by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) calling for an immediate halt to all military and financial support sent to Kyiv, as reported by Deutsche Welle.
The resolution demands an end to sanctions targeting Moscow and urges the regional administration to use its presence in the upper house of parliament, the Bundesrat, to push for a diplomatic settlement while preventing further escalation following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The political initiative succeeded after gaining the support of 44 members in the 83-seat state assembly who represent the AfD and BSW caucuses.
Parliamentary members representing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Social Democratic Party (SPD), Greens, and Left Party voted against the measure.
Saxony-Anhalt Premier Sven Schulze of the CDU dismissed the vote as a political stunt, describing it as a “gift” for the BSW. German public broadcaster MDR reported that representatives of the group argued during the session that the international community must “take into account the security interests of Russia.”
Kyiv’s envoy to Berlin, Oleksii Makeiev, condemned the outcome, calling the motion the "peak of absurdity.” Local news outlets emphasized that the vote remains non-binding and largely symbolic, as decisions regarding international sanctions and defense assistance fall under the direct authority of German federal leaders and the European Union, as reported by Deutsche Welle.
