UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he will try to “repair bridges” between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as tensions between Washington and Kyiv continue, The Guardian reported on October 14.

Burnham made the comments before Zelenskyy was due to arrive at Downing Street, where the two leaders are expected to meet later in the day. Zelenskyy met King Charles III earlier in the day.

“What I have to do in my role is try and repair bridges so that the support comes back,” Burnham told Parliament.

“Therefore I should, at this moment in time, be careful in terms of laying the ground to bring people back together. That is the role I intend to play.”

The comments come after Trump renewed criticism of Zelenskyy and questioned continued US support for Ukraine. Trump has also pressed Kyiv to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries while Washington pursued an energy arrangement with Moscow.

Zelenskyy departed for London from the Polish city of Rzeszów, returning to a route through Poland after previously traveling through Chișinău in Moldova during a period of strained relations with Warsaw.

Burnham has also sought to underline continued British backing for Ukraine. The UK government is accelerating a £1.6 billion ($2.12 billion) package covering more than 5,000 Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs), while preparing additional sanctions and military support.

Earlier, Britain announced plans to accelerate deliveries of more than 5,000 LMMs to Ukraine while preparing additional sanctions, military aid, and fiscal support. The UK has committed £1.6 billion ($2.12 billion) to the missile program, including £45 million ($59.7 million) in new surface-to-air missile deliveries.
