Rubio Demands More Details From Russia as US Monitors Suspected Plague Outbreak “Hour by Hour”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Russia on October 6 to disclose more information about the death of a worker at a Siberian plague research institute, as Washington closely monitors the situation.
On the same day, Reuters reported that the laboratory worker fell ill and died on October 2 under undisclosed circumstances. The death prompted Russian authorities to quarantine dozens of people and fueled public health concerns on social media.

"I think it's incumbent upon Russia to obviously share more information with the world," Rubio told reporters in Iceland, according to Reuters. "We're watching it very closely, hour by hour."
Russian authorities have maintained that the situation is under control, Reuters reported.
Rubio noted that the US has "measures" available to assist Russia if the situation proves more serious than authorities have acknowledged. However, Washington needs additional information before determining whether such assistance is necessary, according to Reuters.

The case has also drawn attention from US President Donald Trump.
Earlier, on October 5, it was reported that the White House was monitoring a suspected plague outbreak in Russia after the death of a 28-year-old employee at an anti-plague research facility in the Irkutsk region.
Nearly 200 people who had contact with her were placed under medical observation, while Russian authorities maintained that no plague cases had been confirmed.
