Russia Escalates Kaliningrad Rhetoric With Nuclear Threat Against NATO

Russia threatened NATO with nuclear retaliation if the alliance attempted to blockade or attack Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, The Moscow Times reported on September 29.
The warning came from the Russian Embassy in the United Kingdom, which reacted to recent British media coverage discussing Kaliningrad’s vulnerability in a potential war between Russia and NATO.

As Russia threatens European countries over Kaliningrad, it has also carried out provocations near the exclave, recently violating Polish airspace with a military helicopter for 42 seconds.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that Warsaw would not escalate the incident if Moscow formally apologized, while warning that Poland remained ready to defend its territory against deliberate threats.
According to The Moscow Times, the embassy also referenced a Sky News docudrama examining a hypothetical strike on the Russian exclave.
“Those advocating plans to blockade or strike Kaliningrad should have no illusions about the consequences,” the embassy stated. “Any military action by the United Kingdom or NATO against Russian territory will be met with a response using all means available to Russia, including nuclear weapons.”

The Russian diplomatic mission also claimed that Moscow had repeatedly made clear it did not seek a confrontation with NATO or European countries. “However, if anyone decides to unleash such a conflict, they should have no illusions: Russia will respond accordingly,” the embassy added.
The Moscow Times reported that the Russian statement followed an article by the British outlet i Paper describing Kaliningrad as a potential vulnerability for Moscow. The publication examined how the exclave could become a major flashpoint in a confrontation between Russia and NATO.
Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Moscow reportedly stationed around 12,000 troops from the 11th Army Corps in Kaliningrad, alongside air defense systems, aviation, and a Baltic Fleet base. One former NATO official cited by the i Paper described the region as Moscow’s “Achilles’ heel.”
Kaliningrad lies between NATO members Poland and Lithuania and is separated from the rest of Russia. The region has repeatedly featured in Moscow’s warnings over NATO military activity in the Baltic area.
Russian officials had previously issued similar threats over the exclave. In April, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko accused European countries of rehearsing a maritime blockade and possible seizure of Kaliningrad during exercises led by the UK-backed Joint Expeditionary Force.
