Tusk Warns of “Critical” Winter as Russian Strikes Force Polish Border Evacuations

Polish authorities temporarily evacuated two border crossings with Ukraine as Russian forces launched an intense wave of missile and drone strikes near the Polish border, Polish broadcaster RMF24 reported on September 24.

The evacuations happened alongside security measures in eastern Poland, where the government deployed military aviation and temporarily suspended flights at the Rzeszów and Lublin airports during previous Russian bombardments of Ukraine.

During a joint press conference with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev in Warsaw, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the border disruptions, noting the proximity of the Russian strikes to Polish territory.

“It is a true drama of today’s times, because it is not the first time that when I talk to one of our partners here in Warsaw about how aggressive Russia’s behavior is and what a problem it poses for Poland, at that exact moment the Russians decide to prove it,” Tusk stated, according to RMF24.

“While we were talking just now, Ukraine was attacked again near the Polish border and we again had to evacuate border crossings in Hrubieszów, in Dorohusk,” he continued.

According to RMF24, the specific crossings at Dorohusk and Zosin were non-operational and evacuated for approximately 30 minutes around noon before normal border traffic was permitted to resume.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski had also recently stated that Poland will not escalate tensions over a recent airspace violation by a Russian military helicopter if Moscow formally apologizes and attributes the incident to pilot error.

Following a 42-second breach near Russia’s Kaliningrad region border, Sikorski clarified to reporters that while Warsaw won’t “make a big deal” out of a mistake, the military is fully authorized under the constitution to shoot down aircraft if a threat is deemed intentional.
