Poland Deploys Military Aviation as Russia Strikes Ukraine, Rzeszów and Lublin Airports Suspend Flights

Poland deployed military aircraft, air defense systems, and electronic reconnaissance assets on September 23 in response to renewed Russian strikes on Ukraine, while airports in Rzeszów and Lublin temporarily suspended operations.

Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command said military aviation had begun operating in Polish airspace as Russia carried out attacks against Ukraine using airborne weapons.
“In connection with the strikes by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, carried out using airborne assault means, military aviation operations have commenced in Polish airspace,” the command said.
Polish authorities also activated the necessary air defense and equipment to protect the country’s airspace during the Russian attack.

The heightened military activity also affected civilian aviation. The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency reported that airports in Rzeszów and Lublin temporarily suspended operations to ensure military aircraft had sufficient freedom to operate.
Later, both airports resumed normal operations after the Polish military operation concluded.
The September 23 deployment follows a similar response less than a week earlier. On September 17, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Russian drone strikes had taken place in Ukraine’s Volyn region near the Polish border.

Poland scrambled military aircraft in response, while operations at the same airports in Lublin and Rzeszów were temporarily suspended.
The latest Polish response came as Russia launched another drone attack on Ukraine, including Kyiv. The September 23 strike on the Ukrainian capital killed at least one person and injured seven others, with strikes and falling debris reported across several districts, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Klitschko said one of the victims, who had been hospitalized in serious condition, later died from their injuries. Four other people remained hospitalized following the attack.
