Russia Could Be Preparing Serious Strikes on Poland in Coming Weeks and Months, Tusk Warns

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Russia’s escalating actions could increasingly affect Poland in the coming weeks and months, as Moscow intensifies attacks near the country’s borders.
Speaking at a briefing at Poland’s Government Security Center on September 13, Tusk said recent developments showed that Russian escalation was becoming increasingly apparent and moving closer to Polish territory, according to Polish broadcaster RMF24.

“Russia’s escalation is becoming a reality, and examples of it are getting closer and closer to our border,” Tusk said. “We must be prepared for a joint response if necessary.”c
Tusk also pointed to Russia’s latest attacks on Ukraine as evidence that Moscow is deploying increasingly dangerous weapons, specifically highlighting the growing use of jet-powered drones.
“The attacks last night demonstrate that the Russians are ready to use more dangerous equipment. I mean jet-powered drones […] Obviously, Ukraine, which is very well prepared to defend against drones, is also unable to counter them with 100% effectiveness,” he said.
Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk, who also attended the briefing, said 13 strikes were recorded in western regions of Ukraine during the Russian drone attack on September 13.
Against this backdrop, Tusk called for an assessment of Poland’s readiness to respond to potential drone-related threats, including operations that could disrupt critical infrastructure and transportation networks.
“I will therefore also be waiting for information on how prepared we are for the possible use of drones and related attempts to disrupt our operations, on the railway or elsewhere. I do not rule out that such situations could also occur here,” Tusk said.
His warning came as the September 13 Russian attack reached areas immediately bordering Poland. A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train in Ukraine’s Volyn region, approximately two kilometers from the Polish border.
State railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia reported that no one was injured, adding that a monitoring team had warned the train crew of the threat in advance.
The same attack also damaged infrastructure near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk international border crossing, one of the main road connections between Ukraine and Poland.
