“This Is an Act of War”: US Lawmakers, EU Say Russia’s Drone Strike on Poland Was Deliberate

EU Foreign Policy chief Kaja Kallas and US lawmakers are warning of escalation after Russia’s overnight drone barrage spilled into NATO territory, forcing Poland to defend its skies against Iranian-made Shahed drones for the first time, with Kallas calling the violations deliberate on X on September 10.
“Last night in Poland, we saw the most serious European airspace violation by Russia since the war began, and indications suggest it was intentional, not accidental,” Kallas said.

The EU stands in full solidarity with Poland. (1/2)
“The EU stands in full solidarity with Poland. Russia’s war is escalating, not ending. We must raise the cost on Moscow, strengthen support for Ukraine, and invest in Europe’s defense.”
She added that Brussels will back initiatives such as Poland’s planned Eastern Border Shield defense line.

In Washington, both Republicans and Democrats urged President Donald Trump to respond forcefully. Congressman Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) described the drone strike on Poland as “an act of war.”
“Russia is attacking NATO ally Poland with Iranian Shahed drones, less than a week after President Trump hosted President [Karol] Nawrocki at the White House. This is an act of war, and we are grateful to NATO allies for their swift response to war criminal Putin’s continued unprovoked aggression against free and productive nations,” Wilson wrote on X.

He urged Trump to impose sweeping sanctions to bankrupt Russia’s war machine and provide Ukraine with weapons capable of striking Russian territory. “Putin is no longer content just losing in Ukraine while bombing mothers and babies, he is now directly testing our resolve in NATO territory,” Wilson said. “Putin stated that ‘Russia knows no borders.’ Free and prosperous nations will teach Russia about borders.”
Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) echoed the warning. “Repeated violations of NATO airspace by Russian drones are fair warning that Vladimir Putin is testing our resolve to protect Poland and the Baltic nations. After the carnage Putin continues to visit on Ukraine, these incursions cannot be ignored,” Durbin said.

Poland’s military confirmed that multiple Russian drones entered its airspace during Moscow’s large-scale strike on Ukraine. Polish forces launched operations to detect, identify, and neutralize the aircraft, leading to the temporary shutdown of four airports, including Warsaw Chopin and Rzeszów–Jasionka.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk later confirmed the “repeated violations” of Polish airspace, which NATO allies helped patrol overnight.

Earlier, a drone identified as a Russian-made decoy system known as “Herbera” was found in eastern Poland, about 50 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The incident occurred near the village of Majdan-Sielec in Lublin Voivodeship.
Poland’s Ministry of National Defense initially described the device as lacking “military characteristics.” A spokesperson for the ministry suggested the drone could have been linked to smuggling activity, noting that border guards have previously recorded cases of contraband shipments by UAVs.
