Poland’s military said it has wrapped up air operations after eight Russian drones entered the country’s airspace overnight, triggering a joint response with NATO allies, the Polish Armed Forces’ Operational Command reported on September 10.

“Work continues to locate possible crash sites of the objects that violated Poland’s airspace,” Operational Command stated.

Authorities urged residents not to approach or touch any unidentified debris, warning that drone parts could contain hazardous materials. Citizens were asked to report sightings to the emergency number 112 or local police stations.

Poland’s military thanked NATO Air Command and the Royal Netherlands Air Force, whose F-35 fighters helped patrol Polish skies during the incident. Ground-based air defense and radar systems have since returned to normal operations.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki said he was in constant contact with defense officials over the violation of the country’s airspace.

“Soon I will hold a briefing at the National Security Bureau with the prime minister present. The security of our homeland is the highest priority and requires close cooperation,” he stated.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an emergency government meeting for Tuesday morning, according to government spokesman Adam Szlapka.

Ukrainian officials described the incident as part of the Kremlin’s escalating war. “The fact that Russian drones entered Poland during a mass strike on Ukraine shows Putin’s growing sense of impunity,” said Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

“Because Putin has not been properly punished for his previous crimes, he continues to escalate, expand the war, and test the West’s resolve,” Sybiha wrote, adding that a weak response now would embolden Russia further. He urged allies to authorize the use of air defenses from neighboring countries to help shield Ukrainian skies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also condemned the violation of NATO territory.

“Today there was another step of escalation–Russian-Iranian ‘shaheds’ operated in the airspace of Poland, in NATO airspace. It was not just one ‘shahed’ that could be called an accident, but at least eight strike drones aimed toward Poland,” Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy stated that this is an extremely dangerous precedent for Europe. Whether there will be further steps depends entirely on the coordination and strength of the response, he noted, and called for the consequences for Russia. Russia must feel that the war cannot be expanded and will have to be brought to an end, he said.

“A strong response is needed–and it can only be a joint response by all partners: Ukraine, Poland, all Europeans, the United States. I thank everyone who is helping,” he added.

Earlier, reports emerged that Poland will receive €43.7 billion in SAFE (Security Actions for Europe) program loans for EU defense projects.
