The exact variant of the Mi-8 involved in the crash has not yet been identified.

According to Militarnyi on October 1, several Russian military aviation units operate in and around the Voronezh region. Units of Russia’s 549th Army Aviation Brigade, which operates Mi-8 helicopters, are stationed near Voronezh and at nearby airfields.

The region is also regularly used by aircraft from the Russian Aerospace Forces’ 15th Army Aviation Brigade, as well as aviation units belonging to Russia’s National Guard and the FSB Border Service, which operate from Baltimore Air Base.

The 549th Brigade and units of the 15th Army Aviation Brigade operate several transport and combat variants of the Mi-8, including the Mi-8MTV-5 and Mi-8AMTSh, as well as older Mi-8MT and Mi-8MTV-1 models.

Specialized Mi-8MTPR-1 electronic warfare helicopters are also based at Baltimore Air Base.

The incident follows another recent crash involving a Russian military aircraft. On September 29, a Tu-95MS strategic bomber went down in the Amur region of Russia’s Far East with seven service members on board.

Russian media outlet Astra reported that the bomber crashed near the village of Krasnoyarovo. Initial reports indicated that six crew members were killed, while another was hospitalized.
