Russian National Kills 2 in France After Ramming Car Into Crowd

French police have arrested a 26-year-old Russian national of Chechen origin after he deliberately drove his vehicle into a crowd in the northern French city of Caen, killing two Afghan men and wounding nine others, Euronews reported on August 27.
The incident occurred near the city’s main train station following a physical altercation outside a local bar.

According to police sources cited by Euronews, the suspect was set upon by several individuals during the fight before leaving the scene and returning with his vehicle. He drove onto a bus lane and deliberately struck a group of people standing under a bus shelter.
A witness told AFP that the driver “got really annoyed, he came back, and he drove into everyone.”
Regional prosecutor Joel Garrigue confirmed the two fatalities were a 35-year-old and a 28-year-old, both believed to be Afghan nationals. Nine other men, aged between 17 and 36, were injured, with seven remaining in critical condition suffering from severe lower-limb fractures. Police sources noted the wounded include French, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, and Sudanese nationals.
The driver fled the scene but was apprehended by the gendarmerie in the neighboring port of Ouistreham following a major search operation, Euronews reported. During questioning, the suspect stated he had been assaulted on the station forecourt before the crash. Authorities confirmed he tested negative for alcohol.
The Caen prosecutor’s office stated there is no apparent terrorist motive behind the attack, noting that the suspect is residing legally in France, has no prior criminal convictions, and was not known to intelligence services. While residents expressed shock, local taxi driver Anthony Hebert noted that while the station area is generally calm, nighttime tensions occasionally erupt, Euronews wrote.
In a separate incident, a 30-year-old Russian national, Mikhail Nikolaevich Shabunin, had committed suicide in Montenegro after killing three employees at a local shooting range and opening fire on police during an intensive manhunt, prompting two national days of mourning.
