Russian Shahed Slips Past Romanian Radars and Crashes Inside NATO Territory

A Russian attack drone crashed in Romania’s Tulcea County near the border with Ukraine on August 14 after flying at an altitude too low to be detected by Romanian military radar systems.

Romania’s Ministry of National Defense said it received a report around noon about an unmanned aircraft that had fallen in a wooded area near Luncavița. According to the ministry, the object was not detected by its radar surveillance network because it was flying at very low altitude.
No casualties or material damage were initially reported. Romanian emergency services were deployed to the area after a fire broke out at the crash site, while the Defense Ministry sent a specialized team supported by an IAR 330 Puma SOCAT helicopter to inspect the location.
Footage recorded by a local resident showed the drone flying over a populated area before the crash. Based on its appearance, Militarnyi identified the aircraft as a Russian Shahed-136 attack drone, which Russia operates under the designation Geran-2.
Romanian specialists later destroyed the wreckage in a controlled detonation, according to the country’s Defense Ministry.
The incident occurred several kilometers from Romania’s border with Ukraine in Tulcea County, an area located across the Danube from southern Ukraine and repeatedly affected by Russian drone operations targeting Ukrainian infrastructure near the river.
It was also the latest in a series of drone-related incidents involving Romania. On August 11, Romanian forces destroyed two Gerbera-type drones found drifting in the country’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea near infrastructure associated with the Neptun Deep gas project.
The drones were detected by a vessel operating in the area before Romanian Coast Guard personnel and explosive ordnance specialists were dispatched to destroy them.
On July 26, a Romanian F-16 also shot down a Russian drone over the Black Sea approximately 12 kilometers northeast of Sulina, according to Romanian authorities. President Nicușor Dan subsequently said continued Russian violations of Romanian airspace were unacceptable, noting that Romania’s airspace is also NATO and European Union airspace.
