Romania Expels Russian Diplomat Following Repeated Drone Incursions Into NATO Airspace

Romania announced that it is expelling a staff member from the Russian embassy, giving the diplomat 5 days to leave the country after 3 Russian drones illegally entered Romanian airspace between July 24 and July 26.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to deliver an official protest regarding the airspace breaches.

Romanian military forces shot down all 3 drones during that period, and radar detected 1 additional drone crossing into Romanian territory on the morning of July 27.

Romanian officials presented debris from 1 of the intercepted drones during the meeting. Investigators confirmed that the components belonged to a drone of Russian origin.

The ministry issued a statement regarding the incidents: "It is absolutely unacceptable and intolerable for the Russian Federation to continue violating the airspace of Romania, which is the airspace of both NATO and the European Union. Russia bears full responsibility for all these serious incidents and for the deterioration of the regional security situation."
