The Royal Navy deployed helicopters to track a Russian intelligence-gathering vessel operating off the coast of Scotland after the ship was observed closely monitoring a NATO military exercise near the Outer Hebrides, The Telegraph reported on November 2.

The Russian vessel, identified as Viktor Leonov, a Vishnya-class intelligence ship, was tracked by the Royal Navy’s Merlin helicopter force between September 29 and October 8.

During that period, the ship was monitoring NATO warships participating in Exercise Strike Warrior, a multinational military drill involving approximately 2,000 personnel from six NATO member states.

In response to the vessel’s activities, the Royal Navy dispatched Merlin helicopters from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall to Glasgow Prestwick Airport, allowing British forces to monitor the Russian ship’s movements near the Scottish coastline.

Captain James Hall, commanding officer of RNAS Culdrose, praised the personnel involved in the operation and emphasized the Royal Navy’s readiness to respond to potential security threats.

“I am immensely proud of the efforts of our people, who have once again demonstrated that the UK is prepared to respond to immediate operational requirements,” Hall said.

He further stressed that the operation demonstrated Britain’s ability to maintain continuous surveillance and protect its territory.

“This operation has been a critical means for demonstrating to ourselves, our adversaries and the nation that we are willing and capable of securing the homeland 24/7. The Merlin Helicopter Force stands ready to answer the call at a moment’s notice,” he added.

The incident comes amid a broader increase in Russian maritime activity near British waters, raising concerns about Moscow’s intelligence-gathering operations around NATO military facilities and exercises.

According to The Telegraph, Russian activity in and around British waters increased by 25% during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

Concerns over Russian maritime operations have also extended to other parts of northern Europe, including the Baltic Sea.

On October 31, Swedish police boarded a Russia-linked cargo vessel near the island of Gotland, reportedly deploying an elite tactical unit to inspect the ship. The vessel is operated by a shipping company previously investigated over suspected links to Russian intelligence activities and hybrid operations across Europe.
