Russian Weapons Seized After Deadly JNIM Attack on Russian Africa Corps Mercenaries in Mali

The Malian militant group JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) ambushed Russian “Africa Corps” forces and Malian junta troops on September 8, killing 13 soldiers, according to reports from specialized media including Sahel Alerte and War Noir, cited by Ukrainian military outlet Militarnyi on September 10.
Russian mercenary operations in Mali—now functioning as the Kremlin-aligned “Africa Corps"—have subjected local populations to widespread abuse. Russian fighters have routinely abducted civilians, holding them in secret detention centers across the country.

Human rights monitors document that detainees face severe torture, starvation, and summary executions—a calculated strategy of terror that researchers warned only deepens regional instability and drives local communities toward insurgent groups.
The attack occurred near the village of Kaka in Mali’s Mopti region. Following the ambush, JNIM claimed to have captured 14 motorcycles, two PKM machine guns, six Kalashnikov assault rifles, six grenades, ammunition, and a DJI drone.
Notably, the captured equipment included several 2023-pattern AK-15 assault rifles, marking the first reported instance of these relatively new Russian firearms being seized in the war.
The incident follows a previous major insurgent attack against a military convoy in northern Mali. That convoy was transporting more than 200 Russian mercenaries and over 100 Malian soldiers. Preliminary estimates indicated that around 60 Malian troops were killed and at least 30 were captured, with dozens more wounded.
JNIM, the official al-Qaeda branch in the Sahel, was formed in March 2017 through the merger of several jihadist factions, including Ansar Dine, Al-Mourabitoun, and the Macina Liberation Front, Militarnyi wrote.
While its primary stronghold remains in Mali, the group has steadily expanded its operations into Burkina Faso and Niger and has recently increased its presence toward Benin and Togo, gradually widening its zone of activity from the central Sahel to coastal West African states.
This ambush follows a similar attack, when Russian Africa Corps mercenaries previously abandoned their Malian allies during a rebel ambush in the Gao region. Russian personnel retreated from a joint convoy without deploying available ground or air support, leaving at least 60 Malian soldiers dead and 30 captured.
Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence noted the episode demonstrates that Moscow treats Malian junta forces as expendable “cannon fodder” in its pursuit of the country’s gold and uranium deposits.
