A military convoy carrying over 200 fighters from the Russian paramilitary Africa Corps and more than 100 Malian soldiers came under attack in northern Mali on July 9.

Three security sources and one representative of an armed group reported the incident. One source noted that a similar attack struck another northbound military convoy earlier this week, as reported by Reuters.

The convoy was traveling toward the northern city of Anefis when it came under fire early in the morning. Fighting has been ongoing in that area since July 4.

On that day, the Al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front launched widespread assaults on army positions across Mali. The Russian forces currently assist the government in fighting insurgents who have operated in the West African nation since 2012.

A representative for the Azawad Liberation Front claimed responsibility for the Thursday attack. It remains unknown if the Al-Qaeda affiliate also participated in the assault. Three sources reported that the neighboring country of Niger provided air support during the fighting. Niger is a close ally of Mali.

A military representative for Mali did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The military in Niger could also not be reached to provide statements.

This escalation followed a late-April offensive by Tuareg separatists and Al-Qaeda-linked fighters, who forced Russian troops into a retreat.

After heavy ground casualties, Russia's Africa Corps—the Wagner Group's replacement—shifted to drone and aerial operations. Despite Russian arms and air support from Niger, Mali's junta remained under severe pressure as insurgent forces cut off supply routes.

On July 5, 2026, a Russian-operated Mi-24 attack helicopter was reportedly shot down by Tuareg-led rebels during a coordinated offensive against Malian government forces and Russia’s Africa Corps in northern Mali.

According to Reuters and defense reporting, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) stated that it had destroyed the helicopter near Gao during intense fighting that took place between July 4 and July 5. While the FLA claimed the aircraft was completely destroyed and the entire crew was killed, neither Russia’s Ministry of Defense nor Mali’s military authorities confirmed the loss at the time.
