Slovakia has announced the closure of all checkpoints on its border with Ukraine. The decision was confirmed in a press release by the country's Financial Administration on May 13.

Officials cited security concerns as the reason for the move. The border crossings were closed at approximately 3:00 PM.
Slovak authorities have not provided a specific time for when the checkpoints will reopen, stating only that the closure will remain in effect "until further notice."
"The Financial Administration recommends that the public monitor current information and follow the instructions of the Financial Administration and the police. We will keep you informed of further developments in the situation," the statement said.

This unexpected border closure follows recent diplomatic efforts between the two nations, highlighting a sudden shift in the regional security landscape.
Only days prior, on May 4, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico had met in Yerevan, Armenia, to discuss bilateral cooperation and Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s integration into the European Union. During those talks, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine remained open to constructive dialogue and was interested in developing strong relations with Bratislava.
A central topic of their discussions was Ukraine’s path toward EU membership, and Slovakia explicitly supported Ukraine’s accession, expressing readiness to provide practical assistance throughout the process.
Additionally, both leaders had agreed to organize reciprocal official visits to Kyiv and Bratislava to further strengthen these ties.
