Police later confirmed that the explosive component had been safely neutralized, while national air surveillance systems reportedly failed to detect any unauthorized entry into the country’s airspace.

According to NewsMaker on October 11, Moldova’s Defense Ministry and national police reported the incident near the village of Geamăna in the Anenii Noi district, where residents of nearby communities reported hearing an explosion. No injuries were reported.

In a subsequent update, Moldovan police confirmed that the drone had struck a tree approximately 13 meters above the ground, about 100 meters from a road.

Specialists from the police explosives unit successfully neutralized the drone’s warhead, eliminating the risk of an uncontrolled explosion.

Investigators also recovered damaged fragments of the aircraft scattered across the forest floor. Additional forensic examinations are planned to establish the drone’s origin and determine the circumstances of the incident.

Police received the initial report at approximately 10:20 pm on October 10, after which military personnel, explosives specialists, and emergency responders were dispatched to the area.

Despite the incident, Moldova’s Defense Ministry stated that national air surveillance systems had not recorded any unauthorized flights during the relevant period.

Authorities have not identified the drone’s origin or confirmed its model. Residents were advised to avoid the crash site and refrain from touching suspicious debris.

The incident comes amid repeated airspace violations involving drones and missiles since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine in February 2022.

The incident follows a similar case on September 30, when a Russian Geran-4 drone equipped with a turbojet engine entered Moldovan airspace before crashing into trees and exploding near a road in the Orhei district. Investigators recovered drone fragments, including engine components and parts marked “Geran-4,” while authorities temporarily restricted airspace during the incident.
